Abstract The Embedded-SIM (eSIM) is not merely a digital version of a plastic card; it is a fundamental shift in telecommunications hardware. Unlike the removable Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC), the eSIM is an eUICC (embedded UICC)—a specialized microchip soldered directly onto a device’s motherboard.
The RSP Ecosystem To understand the technical side, one must look at the Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) architecture. This system allows a "SIM" to be downloaded over-the-air (OTA). It relies on four key elements:
-
eUICC: The secure hardware chip in your phone.
-
SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation): The server-side vault that stores and encrypts your specific eSIM profile.
-
LPA (Local Profile Assistant): A software component on your phone that handles the download and installation.
-
SM-DS (Subscription Manager Discovery Server): A server that helps your phone "find" its pending eSIM profile automatically.
Technical Security eSIMs use AES-256 bit encryption for the profile download tunnel, making them more secure than physical cards. Because the chip is embedded, it cannot be physically removed or stolen to hijack a phone number, providing an additional layer of hardware-based security for travelers.
